Designer Dogs?

There is a new dog in the neighbourhood. Friends got a puppy, and it cost $450.00. When I asked what it was, they said it was a pug-shu. Now, I don't know about you, but to me that says mutt. But, curious, I looked in the newspaper pet listing. There are all kinds of mutts listed, golden doodles, cock-a-poos, etc. It seems these little mixed breed pups are being sold for the same prices as the registered breeds.

Maybe I just march to a different drummer, but instead of encouraging back yard breeders who don't get their pets fixed, aren't there enough mixed breed puppies and dogs at the SPCA already looking for homes?

That's all I have to say. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Comments:
I'm with you...I would never buy a dog (or cat) when there are so many beautiful mutts, mixes, and purebreeds at shelters.

I read your posts that I'd missed. I was scared reading about the elevator. I would go so berserk.

I am not in the market for a cat/dog. I have found all my cats, except one, wondering on the streets alone, scared and way too young.

My BIL just got the cockapoo. It is cute as all get up. But I'm with you. I don't get this new trend in cross breeding.

*applause*

I have nothing against people getting the dog of their choice, particularly if they really love a certain breed, but I also really think that mutts are underrated. My next (and first) dog will come from the SPCA. Just as my cats did. :)

I can't get all indignent because my sister sells Shihnoodles, oodles of Shihnoodles.

I think people do it so they can invent stupid names.

But actually, the offspring of 2 purebred parents is likely to be a very healthy individual - it's called hybrid vigor or something. They will probably live longer than either parent, have more stable personalities. With 2 small parents you at least can be pretty darn confident that you will be getting a small dog, which seems to be the goal.

If I were in the market for another dog (which I'm not) I would go for an F1 hybrid. But I like big dogs. Collie/Shepherd is a good cross. So is Newfoundland/Border Collie.

Dog breeding is a bit silly IMHO, but I'm not a dog lover. My BIL breeds labs & I see how miserable the mother is. I see the negative physical effects afterwards, too. He argues he does it "for the good of the breed." I agrue that he does it for our human enjoyment of wanting good pets and hunters, which I think can be a bit silly.

I can see his point that if responsible breeders weren't around, dogs could spiral into being horrible tempermented mutts. When we get to the day that all the dogs at the SPCA/Humane Society & rescue orgs are given homes, then I'll be happy to support his breeding of purebread labs.

Side note: The Vet Lab on the UW Campus makes any pet owner whose cat gets a kidney transplant take the donating cat home, too. I like that idea a lot. Maybe purebread dogs should have a buy one (purebread), get one (homeless), also.
